Automated manuals were widely used in small European and Asian city cars because they were lightweight, cheap to build, and highly fuel-efficient compared to traditional torque-converter automatics.

  • Smart Fortwo & Forfour (Gen 1 & 2): Equipped with the Softronic / Softouch gearbox. These are infamous for having some of the slowest, most hesitant gear changes of any production car.

  • Fiat 500, Panda, & Punto: Used the Dualogic system. It functioned as a standard 5-speed manual with a robotic clutch actuator.

  • Toyota Aygo, Yaris, & Corolla (Mid-2000s): Marketed as MultiMode (MMT). It required a specific driving technique (lifting off the throttle) to avoid excessive clutch wear.

  • Citroën C1, C2, C3 & Peugeot 107, 1007, 207: Utilised the Sensodrive and later the EGC (Electronic Gearbox Control) / BMP6 systems.

  • Vauxhall / Opel Corsa, Agila, & Meriva: Used the Easytronic 5-speed system, which was notoriously prone to electrical actuator faults as the cars aged.

  • Volkswagen Up!, Škoda Citigo, & SEAT Mii: Features the ASG gearbox. Introduced in 2012 as a lightweight automatic option for the brand's smallest city cars.

  • Renault Clio & Twingo: Equipped with the Quickshift transmission.
